Elderly woman dies, 150 ill after food poisoning at UP wedding

Meerut: An 80-year-old woman died and over 150 others fell ill after suspected food poisoning at a wedding in Kamalpur Kazi village, Dhanaura tehsil, Amroha district, officials said on Thursday.

More than 500 people attended the event on April 19, and guests reported vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain a day later.

Sub-divisional magistrate Shailesh Kumar Dubey said the exact cause of death could not be confirmed as the family of the deceased, Phoolwati, refused a postmortem. He added, “Most patients are being treated at home, and the health department has set up a camp in the village to provide medicine and monitor their condition.”

Officials suspect contaminated food, possibly due to extreme heat. Assistant commissioner, food safety, Vinay Kumar Agrawal said the department was informed on April 21, when the food had already been discarded. “Many people said they ate dahi-bhalla, which may have gone stale, while others had paneer. Most of those who fell ill had eaten food late at night that was prepared earlier and kept in the heat,” he said.

The incident highlights the risks of food spoilage in high temperatures, especially at large gatherings where food is prepared in advance. Local authorities have urged residents to ensure food safety during summer events.
