Dimapur Deputy Commissioner Tinojongshi Chang has officially declared Dimapur an African swine fever (ASF)-infected and surveillance zone following the detection and laboratory confirmation of positive cases in pigs at Signal Angami village. This declaration was made in a notification issued on May 20.
Zones Defined
According to the notification, a 1-kilometer radius from the infected area at Signal Angami village has been designated as the infected zone. Additionally, a 10-kilometer radius from the same area has been declared the surveillance zone. These measures are aimed at containing the spread of the highly contagious viral disease.
Movement Restrictions
The movement of pigs and piglets from both the infected and surveillance zones to non-infected areas has been completely banned. Furthermore, the movement of pigs, pork, pig feed, carcasses, and other pig-related products into and out of these zones is strictly prohibited. Slaughter, sale, transportation, and congregation of pigs within the infected area are also banned until further orders.
Advice to Farmers and Residents
The district administration has advised pig farmers and residents to immediately report any unusual sickness or death of pigs to the nearest veterinary officer or department. All pig farm owners are directed to maintain proper bio-security measures, including regular disinfection and restricted farm access. Disposal of pig carcasses must be carried out strictly as per veterinary department protocols and Government of India guidelines.
Legal Action
The Deputy Commissioner warned that any violation of the order would invite necessary legal action under the relevant provisions of law. This decisive step aims to curb the spread of African swine fever, which poses a significant threat to the local pig population and the livelihoods of farmers.
