Delhi Bakes at 45°C, Power Demand Hits Record High

Delhi experienced a scorching day as temperatures hit 45 degrees Celsius, leading to a record-breaking power demand of 8,302 megawatts (MW). This surpasses the previous peak of 8,000 MW recorded in June 2022, highlighting the city's struggle with extreme heat conditions.

Heatwave Intensifies Across Northern India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi and several states in northern India, warning of a severe heatwave. The maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 45.2 degrees Celsius at the Safdarjung observatory, four notches above normal. Other parts of the city, such as Palam and Lodhi Road, reported even higher temperatures of 46.8 and 45.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Power Demand Soars

The surge in power demand is primarily driven by the increased use of air conditioners and coolers as residents seek relief from the oppressive heat. The Delhi government has assured that there is no shortage of power supply and that all substations are functioning properly. However, the high demand has put a strain on the grid, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

Health Advisory Issued

Health experts have advised residents to stay indoors during peak hours, keep themselves hydrated, and avoid direct exposure to the sun. Hospitals have been put on high alert to handle cases of heatstroke and dehydration. The elderly and children are particularly vulnerable to the extreme weather conditions.

Impact on Daily Life

The heatwave has also affected daily life, with many people avoiding outdoor activities. Schools have adjusted their timings to avoid the hottest part of the day, and construction work has been suspended during afternoon hours. Public transport systems are experiencing increased ridership as people opt for air-conditioned buses and metro trains.

The IMD predicts that the heatwave conditions will persist for the next few days, with temperatures likely to remain above 44 degrees Celsius. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions and stay updated with weather forecasts.
