Brain Tumour Care Shifts to Chronic Disease Management, Experts Urge Stronger Support
Brain Tumour Care Now Like Chronic Disease, Experts Say

Bhopal: As World Brain Tumour Day approaches on June 8, medical specialists are calling for enhanced support systems, noting that brain tumour care is increasingly mirroring the long-term management of chronic diseases.

Advances in Treatment Extend Survival

Recent progress in precision oncology, molecular profiling, and genomic testing has significantly improved survival rates for brain tumour patients. However, experts caution that conditions such as gliomas require ongoing clinical supervision and active caregiver involvement.

Dr Nitin Garg, a neurosurgeon based in Bhopal, emphasized that malignant gliomas often necessitate repeated cycles of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and imaging. He pointed out that treatment costs in cities like Bhopal average between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 6 lakh, excluding follow-up expenses. Families face hidden financial burdens, including extended travel, prolonged hospital stays, and loss of income when caregivers leave their jobs. Under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme, most brain tumours are covered, providing crucial financial relief.

Role of Precision Medicine

Dr Bharat Bhosale highlighted the growing importance of genomic profiling and precision medicine in tailoring therapies for individual patients. While modern neuro-oncology integrates advanced diagnostics and targeted treatments, he cautioned that affordability remains a significant barrier to widespread access.

The experts urge policymakers and healthcare providers to strengthen support networks, including financial counseling, caregiver training, and mental health services, to address the multifaceted challenges of brain tumour care.
