Bob Harris, the veteran BBC Radio presenter, recently took to social media to share an unfortunate update about his battle with prostate cancer. The 80-year-old revealed that the cancer has metastasized to his upper spine, describing the progression as a 'really frightening' development. This news has left his fans and followers disheartened.
What is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer develops when cells in the prostate gland grow uncontrollably. While many prostate cancers grow slowly and remain confined to the gland, some cases are aggressive and spread to nearby organs or bones. Early stages often show no symptoms, making detection through PSA blood tests or physical examinations crucial.
The Frightening Update
The BBC Radio legend shared a photo of himself smiling in the sunshine while standing with a walking stick on Instagram. In his post, he wrote, 'I'm sorry it's been so long since I last posted but the past few weeks have proved to be an extremely testing time. When I posted last time from the hospital, we were trying to find the reason for the excruciating pain I was feeling in my back. Several scans later, we discovered that my prostate cancer has got into my upper spine…really frightening news. So, I immediately began a course of radiotherapy—two weeks in the hospital in total—to bring things back under control. Thankfully I'm back at home now, on the pathway to recovery and feeling stronger every day.'
Amidst Tough Times
Bob Harris acknowledged the immense support from his family during this challenging period. He also thanked his colleagues at BBC Radio 2 for their unwavering support. He promised fans that he would return to the airwaves as soon as possible, expressing his desire to host his show 'Country' by mid-May and 'Sounds of the 70s' by the end of the month. He expressed gratitude to Darius Rucker and Shaun Keaveny for filling in for him during his absence. Harris conveyed his appreciation for the well-wishes, stating that he 'really cannot wait to be back on the radio.'
Bob's Journey
Recently, Bob Harris celebrated a birthday show with Zoe Ball, where they humorously discussed health issues. Now facing similar challenges, he sent a message of love to his listeners, who have responded with an outpouring of support. Known affectionately as 'Whispering Bob,' Harris has had a distinguished career, first gaining fame on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test.' He has been a trusted voice in music at the BBC for decades. This is not the first time Harris has faced health setbacks; he took a break from the studio in 2019 due to illness. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to return to his show 'Sounds of the 70s.'
We hope he comes back stronger than ever!
