Bengaluru H5N1 Avian Influenza Outbreak: Containment Measures in Full Swing
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has confirmed the detection of H5N1 avian influenza at a poultry training centre in Mathkur village, located in Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru. The minister has urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that no human cases have been reported so far. The confirmation was based on an April 14 report from the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.
Immediate Containment and Culling Operations
Authorities have swiftly initiated containment measures in strict adherence to prescribed guidelines. On April 16, state, district, and Primary Health Centre rapid response teams visited the site and declared a three-kilometer radius as an infected zone, with the surrounding ten-kilometer area designated as a surveillance zone. A day earlier, extensive culling operations were carried out, resulting in the disposal of 7,444 chickens, over 14,000 eggs, and 2,250 kilograms of poultry feed, all of which were scientifically disposed of to prevent further spread.
Quarantine and Medical Monitoring
Ten staff members involved with the poultry training centre have been quarantined and placed under medical observation. They are being administered Oseltamivir as a precautionary measure. Health officials are also actively monitoring 19 villages with a combined population exceeding 25,000 people. Door-to-door fever surveillance is currently underway to detect any potential human cases early.

Minister Rao has advised the public to remain cautious and avoid contact with sick or dead birds. The health department continues to maintain a high level of vigilance, with ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent any transmission to humans.
