A devastating day unfolded in Ganjam district on Tuesday. Two separate road accidents resulted in the death of an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker and injuries to seven other individuals. The incidents have sent shockwaves through the local communities.
Head-On Collision Proves Fatal for Health Worker
The first accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday near Digapahandi. A sport utility vehicle (SUV) collided head-on with an ambulance. This tragic crash claimed the life of 45-year-old Lalita Nayak. She worked as an ASHA worker and hailed from Charjodi in Rayagada district.
Lalita was returning from SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack at the time of the accident. Her brother, Dhanu Khosla, explained that she had undergone a health check-up for a stomach-related ailment. Two of her relatives, including her sister, were traveling with her in the SUV. They both sustained serious injuries.
Police authorities confirmed a crucial detail about the ambulance. It was not transporting any patient when the collision happened. Fire-fighters and police personnel from Digapahandi rushed to the accident spot immediately. They worked swiftly to rescue the injured individuals from the wreckage.
All three victims received initial treatment at the local hospital in Digapahandi. Doctors pronounced Lalita dead upon arrival. They referred the two injured relatives to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for advanced care. Police reports indicate their condition remains critical.
The post-mortem examination of Lalita Nayak was conducted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Inspector in-charge P K Patra from Digapahandi police station provided this information. The investigation into the exact cause of the collision is ongoing.
Auto-Rickshaw Overturn Injures Five Women Labourers
A second accident added to the day's misery in Ganjam district. This incident took place at Nuapalli, which falls under the Purushottampur police station limits. An auto-rickshaw carrying five women labourers overturned, causing injuries to all occupants.
The labourers were traveling from Chhatrapur to Nuapalli for their daily work when the accident occurred. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene. Three of the injured women sustained serious wounds. Medical personnel referred them to the medical college and hospital for specialized treatment.
These back-to-back accidents highlight ongoing road safety concerns in the region. They have left families grieving and communities demanding better infrastructure and enforcement. The loss of an ASHA worker, who served the healthcare needs of her community, makes this tragedy particularly poignant.
