Andhra Pradesh Plans Zero-Waste Model for 22 Temples

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to implement a zero-waste management model for 22 temples across the state. Temple authorities have been directed to prepare action plans within a month to recycle and reuse waste generated within temple premises.

High-Level Review Meeting

The initiative emerged during a recent high-level review meeting of executive officers from the 22 temples, held at the endowments department headquarters in Gollapudi, Vijayawada. The new policy aims to reduce the burden on municipal dumping yards by ensuring that temple waste is scientifically managed and reused on-site.

Types of Waste to Be Processed

Temple waste, including flower offerings, food residue, coconut waste, and wastewater, will be processed and recycled locally instead of being transported outside for disposal. The proposed model includes composting and waste management systems, rooftop rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, solar power, and piped gas facilities.

Implementation Timeline

Temple authorities have been asked to prepare proposals, tenders, and cost estimates within a month. These plans will then be submitted for approval and subsequent implementation. The initiative is expected to cover 22 temples across the state, including seven major shrines.

Coordination with Agencies

Solar systems are proposed to be sourced through the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP), while biogas and waste management infrastructure will be developed in coordination with the Swach Andhra Corporation.

Self-Sustaining Temple Ecosystems

Officials stated that the initiative seeks to create self-sustaining temple ecosystems where rainwater, wastewater, and biodegradable waste are treated and reused locally, rather than adding pressure on civic infrastructure. Endowments Department Commissioner K Ramachandra Mohan directed officials to pursue the zero-waste approach and prepare detailed action plans as part of the Swach Andhra-linked green management push.
