Akshaya Patra's 5 Billionth Meal: President Murmu Commemorates

Akshaya Patra Foundation Celebrates Serving 5 Billionth Meal with President Droupadi Murmu

In a landmark achievement for global school nutrition, The Akshaya Patra Foundation is poised to serve its 5 billionth meal on March 17, with President Droupadi Murmu set to commemorate this historic milestone. This event marks a significant chapter in one of the world's largest school feeding programmes, which has evolved from humble beginnings into a nationwide initiative transforming the lives of millions of children across India.

From 1,500 Meals to 5 Billion: A 25-Year Journey

Founded in 2000, Akshaya Patra started by serving just 1,500 meals from the ISKCON temple in Bengaluru. Today, the organization feeds over 2.35 million children every single day, demonstrating an extraordinary scale of impact over its 25-year journey. Sri Madhu Pandit Dasa, Founder-Chairman of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, reflects that this milestone represents not just organizational success but a national commitment to ensuring no child must choose between food and education.

"The 5 billion meals milestone is a profound moment not just for Akshaya Patra, but for India," says Dasa. "Each meal represents our commitment to a world where children have the best of both nutrition and education." The presence of President Murmu as chief guest underscores the national priority placed on child nutrition and well-being, with Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan serving as Guest of Honour for the commemorative event.

Expanding Nutrition Initiatives: The Morning Nutrition Programme

Beyond the midday meal, Akshaya Patra has introduced the Morning Nutrition Programme to address the critical gap of children arriving at school hungry. Currently implemented in six states and reaching 8 lakh children, this initiative ensures students begin their day nourished and ready to learn. The programme aligns with the foundation's broader mission to strengthen connections between nutrition, education, and long-term child development.

"A child who starts the school day nourished is one who can truly make the most of the educational opportunity," explains Dasa. The organization plans to scale this initiative across more locations, recognizing that proper morning nutrition significantly enhances classroom concentration and learning outcomes.

Technology and Systems: Ensuring Quality at Scale

Preparing millions of meals daily requires sophisticated systems to maintain food safety, nutritional balance, and quality control. Akshaya Patra employs semi-automated kitchens featuring rice washers, dal cooking systems, vegetable cutters, and chapati-making machines that minimize manual handling while ensuring uniform quality. Strict standard operating procedures govern every stage from procurement to packaging, with regular audits maintaining compliance with hygiene and nutrition standards.

Technology-enabled monitoring systems track production, ingredient utilization, and daily requirements, while scientifically designed menus meet nutritional guidelines while reflecting local tastes. Specially designed food delivery vehicles and optimized logistics ensure freshly prepared meals reach thousands of schools on time while maintaining safety and quality.

Government Partnerships: The Foundation of Scale

The foundation's partnership with the Government of India and state governments under the PM POSHAN programme (formerly Mid-Day Meal Scheme) has been fundamental to its expansion. Since 2003, when the government first invited NGOs as implementing partners, these collaborations have provided policy frameworks, school mapping, and significant funding support.

"Our partnership gives us the reach, the mandate and a significant portion of the funding required to operate," notes Dasa. The government handles policy and grants, while Akshaya Patra focuses on large-scale meal preparation, logistics, and quality assurance. This public-private partnership model has enabled the organization to plan, invest, and operate with confidence across diverse regions.

Beyond Hunger: Supporting Holistic Child Development

Akshaya Patra recognizes that its role extends beyond addressing hunger to supporting children's overall development. "A hungry child cannot concentrate, cannot absorb and definitely cannot aspire," emphasizes Dasa. The foundation has implemented additional initiatives including:

  • Giving Every Dream a Chance: Mentoring children in pursuing their areas of interest
  • Scholarship Programme: Providing financial assistance for higher education
  • School Rejuvenation Programme: Creating safe, hygienic spaces for meal consumption

These programmes acknowledge that nourished, educated children—particularly girls—create intergenerational benefits for families and communities.

Growth Milestones and Recognition

Key milestones in Akshaya Patra's 25-year journey include the 2003 government decision to involve NGOs in the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, the development of technology-enabled kitchens, and support from corporate partners and individual donors. The organization's work has received numerous accolades including:

  1. Gandhi Peace Prize
  2. National Award for Child Welfare
  3. Nikkei Asia Prize
  4. BBC Global Food Champion Award

Their systems have become case studies at Harvard University, Stanford University, and London Business School, while the 4 billion meals milestone was celebrated at UN Headquarters in New York in 2024.

Future Priorities: Expanding Reach and Global Impact

Looking ahead, Akshaya Patra aims to reach more children while strengthening nutrition delivery through complementary initiatives. The foundation is exploring global partnerships, having already collaborated with Kenya-based Food4Education as a knowledge partner in 2024 to share insights on kitchen operations and scaling strategies.

Inspired by Akshaya Patra's success, the World Food Movement was launched last year to extend large-scale nutrition programmes beyond India, supporting students and communities globally so children can learn with energy and communities can thrive with dignity.

As the organization celebrates serving its 5 billionth meal, this milestone represents not just quantitative achievement but qualitative impact—transforming hunger into hope, one meal at a time.
