AIIMS Bhopal Treats Rare Dual Cancer in Single Surgery

In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at AIIMS Bhopal have successfully treated a 52-year-old patient diagnosed with two distinct primary cancers in a single surgical procedure. The patient, suffering from cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) and renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer), is now recovering well after the complex operation, as announced in a press release on Tuesday.

Patient Presentation and Diagnosis

The patient presented with worsening jaundice, itching, and weight loss. Diagnostic investigations revealed a bile duct obstruction caused by cancer, along with a 6.5 cm tumor in the right kidney. The simultaneous occurrence of two different primary cancers is extremely rare, prompting specialists from the departments of urology and surgical gastroenterology to collaborate on a coordinated treatment plan.

Surgical Procedure

During the operation, the gastroenterology team performed a Whipple procedure to remove the bile duct cancer and reconstruct the digestive tract. Simultaneously, the urology team carried out a radical nephrectomy to remove the affected kidney. By combining both surgeries into a single session, the medical team avoided multiple major operations, thereby reducing surgical risks and improving the patient's recovery prospects.

Advice to the Public

Doctors urge the public not to ignore warning signs such as jaundice, blood in urine, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or loss of appetite. They emphasize that early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly improve cancer outcomes, especially in high-risk groups including smokers, obese individuals, those with chronic kidney disease, or a family history of cancer.
