Ahmedabad's Unseasonal Weather Fuels Prolonged Viral Outbreak, Doctors Report
Ahmedabad's Unseasonal Weather Spurs Prolonged Viral Outbreak

Ahmedabad's Unusual April Weather Triggers Widespread Viral Infections

In a departure from typical seasonal patterns, Ahmedabad has witnessed cooler temperatures during the first eight days of April, with readings ranging between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, notably lower than the usual averages. This unseasonal climate, accompanied by light rainfall and partly cloudy skies, has coincided with a significant rise in viral infections reported by residents across the city.

Surge in Patient Visits and Symptoms

A substantial number of citizens have sought medical attention from local doctors, presenting symptoms such as low-grade fever, body aches, headaches, runny or blocked noses, sore throats, and persistent coughs. For many physicians, viral cases have constituted nearly half of their outpatient department (OPD) load over the past month, highlighting the severity of the outbreak.

Dr. Praveen Garg, a physician based in Ahmedabad, noted a consistent influx of patients suffering from viral infections that last more than two to three weeks. "Typically, it begins with mild fever and related symptoms, which subside with medication. However, after a gap, the same individual gets infected again with similar symptoms. The mixed or double season is a major reason for this pattern," he explained. Dr. Garg emphasized that while Covid infections are suspected in other regions, no such cases have been observed locally. He added that individuals with weaker immunity due to age or underlying health conditions are more susceptible to repeated infections.

Medical Response and Diagnostic Trends

Dr. Dhiren Mehta, another city-based physician and former president of the Ahmedabad Medical Association, stated that diagnostic tests are often avoided in most cases as symptoms remain mild and respond well to treatment. "In most instances, medication along with adequate hydration and rest is effective. In a few severe cases, patients require treatment for a slightly longer duration. Compared to earlier years, viral infection episodes have continued for an extended period as full-fledged summer conditions have not arrived yet," he said.

City-based pathology laboratories have not reported any sharp increase in tests ordered by doctors. In select cases, complete blood count (CBC) and other blood tests are conducted, while tests for influenza A, influenza B, and Covid remain limited, indicating a focus on symptomatic management rather than extensive diagnostics.

Additional Health Concerns: Gastric Ailments

Over the past couple of weeks, some localities in Ahmedabad have also reported cases of gastric ailments. Doctors suggest this could result from a combination of viral infections and the consumption of contaminated food or water. A recent incident involved more than 50 girls from Memnagar being hospitalized due to food poisoning, underscoring the need for caution.

Experts advise citizens to avoid stale or uncovered food to prevent gastric problems during this season, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and proper food handling amidst the ongoing health challenges.
