Mass Food Poisoning Incident at Andhra Pradesh Festival
In a distressing incident, over 50 individuals, including several children, fell ill and required hospitalisation after reportedly consuming flavoured milk during a local deity festival. The event occurred at Singupuram village in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh on April 1 and 2, 2024.
Symptoms and Immediate Response
Devotees attending the Kondamma Thalli Utsavams began exhibiting severe symptoms of food poisoning shortly after consuming the flavoured milk sold by vendors at the festival. Reports indicate that attendees suffered from vomiting, intense stomach pain, and diarrhoea, prompting a swift medical and administrative intervention.
Srikakulam district collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar confirmed that 18 cases were officially reported to the primary health centre in Singupuram. He assured the public that all patients are currently undergoing treatment and their conditions are stable. The district administration has deployed a special medical team to monitor the affected individuals closely and ensure they receive high-quality care.
Investigation and Vendor Accountability
In response to the outbreak, Srikakulam police have initiated an investigation and are questioning three vendors who allegedly sold the flavoured milk during the festival. Authorities have formed a special task force to identify and locate any remaining vendors involved in the sale.
Local residents revealed that some vendors operated mobile flavoured milk stalls at the festival, selling sachets priced at Rs 40 each. Medical and health department officials have attributed the illness to the consumption of substandard beverages distributed during the event.
Officials have issued a stern warning, stating that stringent legal action will be taken against the vendors if they are found responsible for the suspected food poisoning. The investigation aims to determine the exact cause of contamination and prevent similar incidents in the future.
