31 Drug Dependence Cases at Leh De-Addiction Centre

Officials at the Drug De-Addiction Centre (DDAC) in Leh have reported that 31 drug dependence cases were registered this year, with 28 patients successfully completing treatment. The data was disclosed during the concluding programme of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Saptah 2026’, observed in conjunction with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Treatment and Follow-Up at DDAC

DDAC Manager-cum-Incharge Nilza Angmo stated that three beneficiaries are currently undergoing treatment. She highlighted that regular follow-up counselling sessions and medical check-ups are conducted every week or within ten days to ensure sustained recovery. Angmo also commended members of the YATO Club, comprising students from various schools, for actively spreading awareness against substance abuse.

Government Initiatives and Community Role

District Social Welfare Officer Mohd Safdar Bhat addressed the causes, prevention, and impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and society. He outlined government initiatives to combat substance abuse and urged students to become ambassadors of the anti-drug campaign by promoting healthy lifestyles.

Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Padma Angmo of SNM Hospital noted that substance abuse among youth is increasing. She called for stronger preventive interventions and wider public awareness, emphasizing the need for stronger family bonds and open communication between parents and children. She appreciated the efforts of the District De-Addiction Centre.

Staff Concerns and Awareness Activities

During the interaction, DDAC staff also highlighted the issue of pending salaries for the past seven months. Despite these challenges, the centre organized speech and painting competitions involving students from various educational institutions to reinforce the anti-drug message.
