The Maharashtra state health department is set to expand its cancer care infrastructure by opening 27 additional ambulatory cancer centres. These centres will offer advanced treatment options such as immunotherapy and diagnostic services like PET scans under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MPJAY).
Announcement by Health Minister
State Health Minister Prakash Abitkar made this announcement during a high-level meeting at the health services office in Mumbai. He revealed that nine cancer day care or ambulatory centres are already operational across the state, and 27 more will be added shortly.
Public-Private Coordination
Abitkar emphasised the importance of coordination between government and private sectors in combating diseases like cancer. He noted that the rising number of cancer patients in Maharashtra necessitates the expansion of treatment facilities.
Screening and Diagnostic Initiatives
For cancer screening, one diagnostic van is being used in each of the state's eight circles. So far, over three crore citizens have been screened. Diagnostic and treatment services are also provided through the Maharashtra Cancer Warriors initiative, which involves expert oncologists.
Innovative Technology Presentation
During the meeting, a South Korean institute presented on 'liquid biopsy' technology, which enables early diagnosis of all types of cancer. This technology could further enhance early detection efforts in the state.
