Madurai Workshop Empowers 150 Women Farmers in Agri-Leadership and Nutrition
A significant one-day women's forum and workshop was successfully organized on Wednesday at the Community Science College and Research Institute, under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Madurai. This event was specifically designed to empower women to take on leadership roles within the agriculture food sector, marking a pivotal step towards gender inclusivity in farming and agribusiness.
Focus on Leadership and Entrepreneurial Skills
The programme, conducted as part of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Women in Agriculture (AICRP-WIA), brought together approximately 150 women agriculturists and agri-entrepreneurs from the districts of Madurai, Theni, and Sivaganga. The workshop concentrated on enhancing women's participation, leadership capabilities, and entrepreneurial skills, with a special emphasis on nutrition-based innovations and value addition in agricultural products.
Expert Insights on Horticulture and Food Safety
A key horticulture session was led by Professor Rajadurai, who delivered an informative talk on the nutritional value of food and recent advancements in food processing infrastructure. He emphasized the critical importance of hygienic food technology and strict adherence to food safety regulations to ensure the supply of high-quality and safe food products. Professor Rajadurai further highlighted the concept that "food must be medicine," underscoring the role of nutrition in promoting health and well-being.
Exhibition of Innovative Food Products
A major highlight of the event was the exhibition of novel food products developed by the college. These innovative offerings included:
- Moth Bean Nutrimix: Prepared using pearl millet, moth bean, roasted Bengal gram dhal, and sugar.
- Banana Pseudostem Ready-to-Serve Beverage: A unique drink made from banana plant parts.
- Low-Fat Healthy Chips: Designed as a nutritious snack alternative.
- Various Nutritious Mixes: Aimed at enhancing dietary diversity and health benefits.
These products were specifically crafted to promote health, improve nutrition, and generate income opportunities for women in the agricultural sector, aligning with the workshop's goals of economic empowerment and sustainable farming practices.
