Activists Launch Food Distribution Drive for Relocated Stray Dogs in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

In a bid to address growing concerns over animal welfare and public safety, animal rights activists in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar have initiated a food distribution program for stray dogs. The effort targets areas including Naregaon and the nearby Chikalthana industrial zone, where hundreds of dogs have allegedly been illegally relocated by the municipal corporation.

Allegations of Illegal Relocation and Starvation

According to activist Berryl Sanchis, over 500 stray dogs have been moved and abandoned in industrial areas over recent months. She emphasized that this relocation occurred after sterilization under the Animal Birth Control program, which she claims is unlawful. "Such relocation is taking place after the sterilisation of dogs under the Animal Birth Control programme. It is illegal. In a way, civic authorities are responsible for cases of dog bites," Sanchis stated.

Sanchis further explained that the relocated dogs have become aggressive due to starvation, posing risks to both the animals and local residents. "Dogs in Naregaon and nearby areas have been relocated illegally by the municipal corporation and have become aggressive due to starvation. The feeding of stray dogs is out of concern for dogs as well as to ensure the safety of local residents," she added.

Community Support and Calls for Sterilization

Animal lover Nilesh Dharashivkar voiced strong support for the feeding initiative, arguing that it helps prevent man-animal conflicts. "The feeding of dogs is essential to avoid man-animal conflict. Keeping dogs starved is not a solution to the menace of stray dogs, but effective animal sterilization is," he said. Dharashivkar urged the public not to oppose dog feeders, highlighting the importance of humane treatment and proper sterilization methods as long-term solutions.

Municipal Corporation's Response Unclear

Efforts to obtain a comment from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation have been unsuccessful. Animal husbandry officer Shaikh Shahed Shaikh Nizam did not respond to calls or text messages, leaving the civic body's stance on the allegations unclear. This lack of communication has fueled further criticism from activists, who demand accountability and adherence to legal protocols in animal management.

The food distribution drive underscores ongoing tensions between animal rights groups and municipal authorities, with activists calling for immediate action to address the welfare of relocated stray dogs and ensure community safety through ethical practices.
