Ekdanta Sankashti Chaturthi 2026: Date and Time
There are two Chaturthi observances each month during Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. This month, Ekdanta Sankashti Chaturthi vrat will be observed on the Chaturthi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. The fast falls on May 5, 2026. The Chaturthi Tithi begins at 05:24 AM on May 5 and ends at 07:51 AM on May 6. The moonrise on Sankashti day occurs at 10:35 PM.
Significance of Ekdanta Sankashti Chaturthi
Sankashti Chaturthi occurs every month on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha. This month, it is known as Ekdanta Sankashti Chaturthi in Jyeshtha. Chaturthi during Shukla Paksha is called Vinayak Chaturthi, while that during Krishna Paksha is Sankashti Chaturthi. This day holds great religious and spiritual importance. Devotees of Lord Ganesha observe a fast from sunrise to sunset and break it after moonrise. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is known as the first worshipped god, or Pratham Pujya. He is worshipped before any puja ritual and before starting any auspicious event. No auspicious event is considered complete without first worshipping Lord Ganesha. To appease him, devotees must worship with deep faith and pure devotion. It is essential to avoid tamasic activities and bad habits such as drinking alcohol, eating non-vegetarian food, being cruel to animals, and to maintain celibacy while observing the fast. Lord Ganesha is known for removing all obstacles and hurdles from devotees' lives and bringing prosperity. Therefore, people worship him with devotion to attain prosperity, happiness, and good fortune. Devotees express gratitude to the Lord and begin their fast with his blessings. Puja Rituals for Ekdanta Sankashti Chaturthi
- Wake up early in the morning and take a bath before starting puja rituals.
- Clean the home, especially the puja room.
- Place a wooden plank and set an idol of Lord Ganesha on it.
- Light a diya with desi ghee, apply haldi tilak to the Lord, adorn him with a garland and durva grass, and offer Laddoo as bhog prasad.
- Offer fruits, especially banana and meetha paan, then place a kalash filled with water.
- Recite the Ekdanta Sankashti Chaturthi katha and the Vinayak ji ki katha.
- Chant the Ganesha mantra 108 times to seek his blessings.
- Chant the aarti: "Jai Ganesha Jai Ganesha Jai Ganesha Deva" and "Shendur Lal Chadhayo."
- Offer bhog prasad to Lord Ganesha and then offer arghya to the Moon God.
- Distribute the bhog among family members, break your fast, and consume sattvik food without onion and garlic.
