Bihar Agricultural University Achieves Patent Milestone for Agricultural Innovation

In a significant development for agricultural engineering, Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) in Bhagalpur has been granted a Patent Design Registration Certificate by the Government of India's patent office. The recognition is awarded under the Designs Act, 2000, for the university's groundbreaking Motorized Mechanical Palmyra Palm Fruit Pulp Extractor (MMPPFP).

Recognition of Novelty and Industrial Applicability

The patent registration formally acknowledges the machine's novelty, originality, and industrial applicability. This achievement is poised to substantially strengthen BAU's intellectual property portfolio within the agricultural engineering sector, marking a pivotal step in the institution's research and development endeavors.

Multidisciplinary Team Behind the Innovation

The technology was developed through the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team of scientists. The project was led by BAU Vice-Chancellor Duniya Ram Singh, with key contributions from researchers including Sanoj Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Ashish Kumar, Prem Prakash, Md Wasim Siddiqui, and Anil Kumar Singh.

Addressing Traditional Extraction Challenges

Vice-Chancellor Duniya Ram Singh explained that the high-capacity motorized solution was specifically designed to overcome the limitations of traditional manual extraction methods for Borassus flabellifer (palmyra palm) fruit pulp. The conventional approach is notably labor-intensive, less hygienic, and inefficient, often resulting in significant post-harvest losses that impact productivity and economic returns for farmers.

Enhanced Processing Capabilities

The newly developed machine boasts impressive processing capabilities, handling up to 50 kilograms of fruit per batch. This represents a substantial reduction in extraction time while simultaneously improving pulp recovery efficiency. The system is engineered to extract pulp rapidly with minimal manual intervention, thereby reducing fiber contamination, lessening labor drudgery and operational fatigue, and maintaining superior processing standards throughout the operation.

Focus on Efficiency and Safety

BAU Director of Research, A K Singh, emphasized that the machine has been meticulously designed with operational efficiency and ergonomic safety as primary considerations. The design ensures faster extraction cycles and higher pulp recovery rates, which collectively contribute to improved processing economics for agricultural operations. This focus on both performance and user safety underscores the university's commitment to practical, sustainable agricultural solutions.
