Authorities at the Dayabhai Maoji Majithiya Ayurved Mahavidiyalaya in Yavatmal have decided to take strict action against 18 senior students for allegedly ragging first-year Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) students. The action follows a complaint lodged on the University Grants Commission (UGC) Anti-Ragging Helpline.
Details of Punishments
According to official information, one student will be suspended from the college for a period of one year. Eight other students will face suspension for six months, while eight more students will be subjected to monetary penalties. Additionally, three students have been issued strict warnings regarding their conduct.
Complaint and Investigation
The complaint, filed by first-year students, alleged that nearly 21 senior students were involved in ragging activities. The reported incidents included verbal abuse, forcing juniors to perform tasks, making them write assignments, and calling them to rooms, among other forms of harassment. Following the complaint to the UGC Anti-Ragging Helpline in New Delhi, the college and the Avdhutwadi police station were directed to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report. Acting on these instructions, the college convened a meeting of its Anti-Ragging Committee.
Inquiry Findings
During the investigation, statements of all students concerned were recorded. Tehsildar Dr. Yogesh Deshmukh, a member of the Anti-Ragging Committee, stated that the inquiry confirmed the involvement of certain senior students. "Based on the findings, strict action has been taken. Some students were suspended, some fined, and others warned with instructions to refrain from such behavior in the future," he said. The college administration has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a ragging-free campus and ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
