SNL's Marcello Hernández Stays, Talks Netflix Special 'American Boy'

In a clear message to fans, Saturday Night Live cast member Marcello Hernández has firmly stated he is not planning to leave the iconic sketch show. This reassurance comes during a period of significant change for the programme, marked by high-profile departures.

“I’m There”: Hernández Commits to SNL

Speaking exclusively to Justin Sylvester from Live From E! on the red carpet at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards in Santa Monica, California, Hernández addressed his future directly. When asked if he planned to step away following the mid-season exit of fellow cast member Bowen Yang, the 28-year-old comedian responded emphatically. “I’m there, I’m there, I’m there,” he declared with a smile, offering relief to fans concerned about more cast turnover.

Hernández, who joined SNL in 2022, emphasised his ongoing passion for the demanding job. “I’m having fun, bro. It’s a crazy job and you get to meet so many crazy people—and I love it,” he told Sylvester. His remarks underscore a strong commitment to continuing with the show as its ensemble dynamics evolve.

Paying Tribute to Bowen Yang and Looking Ahead

Hernández spoke fondly of Bowen Yang's impact on the show, comparing his former colleague's work ethic to a top athlete's performance. “I look at it like sports,” he said. “That’s a guy who put up numbers. Consistent, always putting up big sketches and he had a distinct voice, and everybody loves him.” He added that Yang's dedication was visible behind the scenes, calling him “a guy to learn from, for sure.”

Yang's departure was a surprise for many viewers this season. The comedian, known for his distinct style, left a notable void. In a reflective Instagram note, Yang expressed gratitude for his time at 30 Rock, writing, “i loved working at SNL, and most of all i loved the people.”

Beyond SNL: Netflix Special and Awards Night Excitement

Outside of his SNL duties, Hernández has a major project launching. His Netflix stand-up special, titled “American Boy,” is set to premiere on 7 January. Recorded in front of a hometown audience in Miami, the special promises to showcase a different side of his comedy.

At the Critics’ Choice Awards, where SNL was nominated for Best Variety Series, Hernández was also set to present an award. He shared his excitement about rubbing shoulders with other talents, mentioning a fan moment with Rhea Seehorn from Pluribus. “I have my whole family on that right now,” he said, adding he was on a mission to get selfies for his mother, a dedicated series watcher.

While not individually nominated this year, Hernández's enthusiasm highlights his current satisfaction. As SNL navigates its future, his steady presence and comedic voice, including beloved characters like Domingo, seem set to remain a key part of the show's fabric.
