Renowned Filmmakers Back Heartfelt Short Film 'Thursday Special'
Two of India's most celebrated filmmakers have thrown their support behind a new cinematic project. Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have officially come on board as presenters for director Varun Tandon's short film titled 'Thursday Special'. This move signals strong industry endorsement for the young filmmaker's work.
A Tender Story of Love and Companionship
The film presents a gentle, understated exploration of love, companionship, and the subtle changes that come with time. It centers on an aged couple named Ram and Shakuntala, portrayed by actors Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama. Their characters are bound by decades of marriage, a shared passion for food, and a cherished weekly ritual that gives the film its name.
According to a press release, the narrative delves into the quiet moments of a long-term relationship, focusing on the beauty found in everyday routines and the deep connection that develops over years.
Shoojit Sircar Praises the Film's Maturity
Shoojit Sircar, the acclaimed director behind films like 'Piku', 'Vicky Donor', and 'October', expressed his admiration for the short film. He revealed that 'Thursday Special' genuinely moved him with its simplicity and gentle approach to storytelling.
"Varun's nuanced portrayal of companionship, ageing, and love is heartfelt and mature," Sircar stated. "It's a delicately handled take on marriage and middle-age relationships - especially impressive for a young filmmaker."
He even drew a personal connection, noting that the film reminded him of his own unreleased feature "Shoe Bite," which starred the legendary Amitabh Bachchan.
Vikramaditya Motwane Highlights Overlooked Stories
Vikramaditya Motwane, the creative force behind several films and series that have reshaped contemporary Indian cinema, shared his thoughts on what makes the project special. He emphasized that what stayed with him after watching was the film's attention to lives that often go unnoticed on screen.
"When I watched 'Thursday Special', I was struck by the fact that though all the stories we tell are human stories, we tend to forget that there are so many other stories out there in the mundane," Motwane explained. "It finds unique stories in the lives of people you might not expect."
Discussing his decision to present the film, he added, "I really enjoyed it. I think people should see it, and they will like it. It's a film you can talk about and discuss, not just from an aesthetic perspective. While it's beautifully directed and performed, it is truly special in terms of pure story and pure feeling."

Audiences will soon have the opportunity to experience this heartfelt story. 'Thursday Special' is scheduled for release on January 29. It will be available for viewing on the Humans of Cinema channel on YouTube, making it easily accessible to a wide audience.
