Pixar's Creative Decision to Remove LGBTQ Elements from 'Elio' Explained
Pete Docter, the chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios, has publicly disclosed the reasoning behind the studio's removal of an LGBTQ storyline from its 2025 animated feature film Elio. This revelation came during a significant restructuring of the project, as detailed in a recent interview with Variety.
Studio's Approach to Family-Friendly Storytelling
Docter emphasized that Pixar made a conscious decision to scale back certain narrative elements that the studio believed might be challenging for younger audiences to comprehend without appropriate parental supervision. In his words, "We're making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy," highlighting the studio's commitment to crafting accessible stories for children and families worldwide.
Film's Premise and Initial Challenges
Elio, which premiered in June 2025, follows the journey of a lonely boy who seeks companionship among the stars after facing rejection from his peers. Despite its imaginative and heartfelt premise, early test screenings reportedly generated weak audience responses, with many viewers indicating they would not be willing to pay for theatrical tickets.
In response to these disappointing results, Docter mandated a substantial reworking of the film, even though a significant portion of the animation had already been completed. This overhaul led to the departure of the original director, Adrian Molina, with directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi subsequently stepping in to implement extensive changes to the story and character details.
Specific LGBTQ Elements That Were Removed
According to reports from Variety, earlier versions of Elio included subtle moments suggesting the title character might be gay. One particular version featured Elio riding a pink bicycle and envisioning a future with a male crush. These elements were entirely eliminated during the revision process as part of the studio's broader narrative simplification efforts.
Internal Criticism and Broader Context
The decision to remove these LGBTQ storylines sparked considerable criticism within Pixar's workforce. This internal reaction was further intensified by another creative decision at parent company The Walt Disney Company, which also cut a transgender character from Pixar's animated series Win or Lose, as reported by Variety.

Elio eventually released worldwide and grossed approximately USD 150 million globally by the conclusion of its theatrical run. While this figure represents a strong performance for certain animated releases, the film reportedly carried a production budget of around USD 150 million, excluding global marketing and distribution expenses.
