Jeethu Joseph Defends Theatres Over OTT, Warns Against Copycat Trends
Jeethu Joseph: Theatres Offer Unique Experience OTT Can't Match

Many viewers now skip theatres for OTT platforms. They prefer watching films from home. Filmmakers oppose this trend. They believe the complete film experience cannot be enjoyed on TV screens.

Jeethu Joseph Champions Theatrical Experience

Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph recently shared his thoughts. He explained why watching movies in theatres feels very special. Joseph stated that television cannot recreate the theatrical experience.

In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Joseph said, "We can never recreate or produce a theatrical experience in Television. Experiencing a movie in theatres is always special."

Theatres Have Transformed Over Years

Joseph highlighted how theatres have changed. He noted that theatres now exist everywhere, including small towns. The filmmaker emphasized the improved quality available today.

"We have well-equipped theatres which have 4K Dolby Atmos projection, even in small towns," Joseph added.

He recalled older times when people avoided theatres. Poor quality deterred a section of the audience. Long queues and heavy crowds created persistent problems. Joseph feels everything has become much easier now.

Booking Simplicity and Enhanced Comfort

Jeethu Joseph believes movie watching has simplified today. He said, "We don't have to struggle that hard today. We can book tickets online, select the show we want to watch, and even the seats."

This comfort makes him confident about theatres surviving. Joseph expressed hope for the film industry's recovery. He stated, "So I feel the industry and everything associated with it will return to normal once the pandemic gets controlled."

Warning Against Blindly Following Trends

During Mirage promotions, Joseph discussed film industry trends. He stressed the need for variety in cinema. "An industry should have movies from different genres," he explained.

The director warned about blindly copying successful formulas. He observed, "What usually happens is that when a film in one genre becomes a superhit, everyone jumps in to make the same."

Referring to Lokah's success, Joseph added, "With 'Lokah' success, now the risk is that everyone will start doing superhero movies. That's not the right thing to do." He believes filmmakers should always try new ideas.
