Gkids Adds Two Studio Ghibli 4K Films to North American Theaters

Gkids Announces New 4K Studio Ghibli Releases for North American Theaters

Gkids, a prominent American television and film producer, is set to enrich its North American lineup with two beloved animated classics. The company has confirmed newly remastered 4K releases of 'Whisper of the Heart' and 'The Secret World of Arrietty', scheduled for April 21 and May 19, respectively. These screenings will be showcased in IMAX theaters across the United States and Canada, offering both the original Japanese language with subtitles and English-dubbed versions to cater to diverse audiences.

Expanding the 4K Restoration Initiative

This move is part of Gkids' ongoing strategy to reintroduce restored Studio Ghibli titles in premium formats, aiming to reach a broader viewership. According to a report from Variety, the company is extending its collaboration to bring a series of newly remastered films to theaters throughout North America. The wider rollout began in December, with these two films following the upcoming 4K remaster run of 'Kiki's Delivery Service', set to commence on March 13.

The partnership has already demonstrated significant success, as evidenced by the performance of 'Princess Mononoke'. This film became the second-highest-grossing vault release in the history of large-screen formats, highlighting the strong audience demand for these enhanced cinematic experiences.

Details on the Featured Films

'Whisper of the Heart' originally debuted in 1995. Directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, the film was crafted from a screenplay and storyboards by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, based on the manga by Aoi Hiiragi. The narrative centers on Shizuku, a young dreamer whose life takes a transformative turn after an encounter with a mysterious cat. Her journey of self-discovery is further shaped by an aspiring boy named Seiji and an enchanted cat figurine known as The Baron.

'The Secret World of Arrietty' was released in 2010. Directed by Academy Award nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the film features a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, who also contributed to project planning. It adapts Mary Norton's children's novel 'The Borrowers', following Arrietty, a member of a race of tiny people living hidden beneath the floors of a human home. Her life is irrevocably altered when a boy named Shawn discovers her, leading to an unexpected bond. The English-dubbed version boasts a star-studded cast including:

  • Bridgit Mendler
  • David Henrie
  • Amy Poehler
  • Will Arnett
  • Moises Arias
  • Carol Burnett

Behind the 4K Remastering Process

The 4K remastering for this series is being meticulously overseen by Atsushi Okui, whose longstanding collaboration with Studio Ghibli dates back to 'Porco Rosso' in 1992. Most recently, Okui served as the director of digital imaging on Miyazaki's Academy Award-winning film 'The Boy and the Heron', which marked the first title from the studio to receive such a high-quality release. Gkids has been instrumental in managing North American distribution for the Studio Ghibli library across various formats and platforms, while also operating the annual Ghibli Fest monthly theatrical program since 2017.

This initiative underscores Gkids' commitment to preserving and promoting iconic animated works, ensuring that new generations can experience these timeless stories in enhanced visual quality. The addition of these two films to the 4K lineup is expected to further solidify the company's role in bringing Studio Ghibli's magic to audiences across North America.
