Bhumi Pednekar Opens Up on Emotional Burnout and Sabbatical Ahead of 'Daldal' Premiere
In a deeply personal revelation ahead of the premiere of her gritty OTT crime drama 'Daldal', actress Bhumi Pednekar has shared the profound reasons behind her recent disappearance from the spotlight. During a candid conversation, the acclaimed performer confessed that a decade of relentless work, combined with the polarized reception to her last appearance in the 2025 Netflix series 'The Royals', led to a significant period of emotional depletion.
The Toll of Trolling for 'The Royals'
Bhumi Pednekar starred as Sophia in the Netflix series 'The Royals' opposite Ishaan Khatter. While the show achieved notable viewership success and secured a Season 2 renewal, Pednekar's performance faced intense scrutiny and widespread social media trolling. In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhumi opened up about this challenging experience, stating, "When there is that much noise, you get numb."
The 'Mere Husband Ki Biwi' actress acknowledged that while she valued constructive feedback, the barrage of mean-spirited comments online ultimately prompted her decision to take a break. She has not worked on a movie set since June 2025 and describes this hiatus as the "best decision" for her mental peace and well-being.
Confronting the Fear of Mediocrity and Pursuing Growth at Harvard
Beyond the impact of trolling, Bhumi Pednekar also revealed a deeper, more personal fear that haunted her: the dread of becoming a mediocre actor. She expressed, "I had nothing left in me, no real-life experiences I could extend to my craft and that scared me."
Pednekar made a heartfelt confession, noting, "One of the biggest fears I had was being mediocre, and I think I reached there. It was this realisation, rather than the trolling itself, that pushed her to go back to the drawing board. It was important for me to accept that, and not be in denial, because I know what I’m capable of."
To rediscover herself and rejuvenate her creative spirit, the 'Khel Khel Mein' actress utilized her time away from the limelight to focus on personal growth. She completed a leadership and global policy course at the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School. Reflecting on this journey, she shared, "I read, I watched movies, I went to Harvard and did a course. I wanted to experience life again because I felt depleted as an actor."
