Iqbal Khan Delves Into the Emotional Core of 'Yaadein' and Personal Revival
The television series Yaadein is striking a profound chord with audiences through its authentic emotional narratives and uplifting themes of hope. In an exclusive interview, actor Iqbal Khan shares insights into his portrayal of a character grappling with profound pain and personal rediscovery, revealing what drew him to this compelling project.
Exploring New Emotional Territories as Dr Dev
How does this role differ from your previous characters?
I have been privileged to embody diverse roles throughout my career, but Dr Dev stands apart due to his remarkable emotional depth. His emotional quotient is exceptionally high; he is a deeply feeling individual who remains grounded in reality. He embodies righteousness without veering into superficial idealism. This nuanced balance is thrilling for me as an actor, offering an opportunity to explore layers I have not previously accessed.
Navigating and Disengaging from Intense Emotional Phases
How do you disconnect from such intense emotional headspace after filming?
Each actor develops their own method, but for me, emotional scenes are particularly demanding. Entering that mental state requires preparation, but exiting it is not always instantaneous. The emotions often linger, especially following powerful scenes. The shift in environment after a scene concludes aids in the gradual return to oneself. This transition is crucial, though emotionally heavy scenes do tend to remain with me longer than others.
A Pivotal Moment of Emotional Weight on Set
Was there a specific moment during filming where you felt the full weight of your character's story?
Early in the series, there is a scene where Dr Dev learns of his son's loss, which was especially heavy. The entire set felt the gravity; a palpable silence and focus enveloped us during filming. The direct impact of my character's experience made the emotional heaviness intensely real. Such scenes are draining, and their intensity often persists long after the cameras stop rolling.
Portraying a Doctor: Insights into the Profession's Emotional Burden
Did playing a doctor alter your perspective on the emotional aspects of the medical field?
To some extent, yes, though I was already familiar with this world, having many doctors in my family, including sisters and extended relatives. I have witnessed both the professional and emotional sides. Portraying a doctor in Yaadein reinforced the immense emotional burdens they carry beyond mere treatment, deepening my existing respect for their dedication.
A Personal Second Chance That Reshaped a Career
Since the show focuses on second chances, can you share a personal experience of receiving one?
This was a defining period in my life. After two early films that did not succeed, it genuinely felt like my professional journey had ended. I was uncertain about the future, navigating a difficult space. Then, I landed my first television project, coincidentally with Sony, which became a major success. This felt like a true second chance, completely transforming my path—a fresh start that restored my confidence and provided new direction.
Collaborative Chemistry with Co-Star Gulki
What has it been like sharing the screen with Gulki, and what does she bring to the set?
Working with Gulki has been wonderful. She is a highly competent and sincere actor. I particularly value the collaborative nature of our scenes, which elevates our performances. Moreover, she brings a lightness to the set with her vibrant and fun-loving personality. This is essential on a show like Yaadein, where we frequently handle heavy emotions. After intense scenes, having someone who can uplift the energy is invaluable, and she does so effortlessly.
What Audiences Can Anticipate from 'Yaadein'
What can viewers expect from the show?
Audiences can anticipate genuine honesty from Yaadein. The performances are authentic and rooted, with storytelling that avoids preachiness. While there are intense emotional moments, lighter scenes provide balance and smiles. Importantly, each episode leaves a lasting impression—a thoughtful insight, a life lesson, or a resonant feeling that endures.
