Namratha Gowda Returns to Kannada Cinema After 15 Years with 'Mahaan'
Kannada television actor Namratha Gowda steps back onto the big screen after more than fifteen years. She joins the cast of the upcoming film Mahaan. The movie also features Vijay Raghavendra and is directed by PC Shekar.
Selective Approach to Roles
Namratha Gowda spoke about her long absence from cinema. She received many offers after gaining popularity on television and reality shows. However, she chose to remain highly selective. She turned down roles that did not match her vision as an actor.
"People around me kept asking when I would return to films," she says. "But I did not want to jump into the wrong projects. I avoided scripts I could not connect with. I also did not want to be typecast as just another heroine."
Breaking Stereotypes in Film
Namratha Gowda started her career in film and television at the age of seven. She continued until she was fifteen. Then, she took a break from the limelight to focus on her education. Years later, she made a professional comeback to television. That move has been successful so far.
When she read the script for Mahaan, she knew it was the right project immediately. She believes it could bring her recognition not only in Kannada cinema but across other film industries as well.
"I have admired PC Shekar's work for a very long time," she shares. "When I was offered this film that talks about the struggles of farmers, I accepted it right away. I want to break the stereotype of how female actors are presented in films. My character here does exactly that."
Embracing New Challenges
Namratha Gowda is currently seen in the Kannada television series Karna. She admits that every step of her cinema comeback has presented a challenge.
"In television, we often exaggerate emotions," she explains. "But in cinema, I had to unlearn that. I needed to underplay my character a lot. The role I play in this film is unlike anything I have done before. So, everything about this project has been a challenge for me."
She adds that she hopes good scripts will come her way after the release of Mahaan. The film represents a significant step in her journey to redefine her acting career on the big screen.
