Malayalam action thriller 'Kattalan' has finally hit theatres, and social media is abuzz with initial audience reactions. Headlined by Antony Varghese, the film opened with high expectations due to its rumored connections to the world established in 'Marco'. Directed by debutant Paul George, the story delves into ivory smuggling, gang rivalries, and violent conflicts.
Mixed Reactions Surface Online
Shortly after the first shows, moviegoers began sharing their thoughts on the screenplay, narration, and action sequences. One user wrote, '#Kattalan First Half Review Plot is Ivory smuggling and Gang rivalry Elaborate intro setup for main characters, Strong Villians BGM By Ravi Basrur is superb Average intro for Pepe. No high moments till now Interval block Need a strong 2nd half Just Decent 1st half.' Another viewer criticized the film's execution and sound design, stating, '#Kattalan - First Half - Headache!! Too loud BGM and slow mo frames cannot save poor script & listless narration. The biggest issue is that I am unable to understand what majority characters except Jagadeesh are saying because of the loud BGM & sound recording.'
Ravi Basrur's Background Score Wins Praise
While reactions to the screenplay were divided, many praised the background music by Ravi Basrur. One audience reaction noted, '#Kattalan getting great response after the first half! Nice action blocks filled with spine chills and storytelling getting interesting and intense towards the second half. All eyes on to the second half! Ravi basur is peaking at the right time.' However, not everyone was impressed with the overall presentation.
Comparisons to Familiar Gangster Dramas
Another early review described the film as repetitive, writing, '#Kattalan - BELOW AVERAGE FIRST HALF The Same Old Wine Drug Cartel, Gangster War Drama Which Didn't Excites Any More With a Flavour of Marco's Narrative. Except Ravi Basurar Bgm, Nothing Impressive. Action Blocks & Perfo Felt Poor. Need Strong S.H.' Several viewers noted similarities in tone and visual style between 'Kattalan' and 'Marco'. The appearance of actors associated with Marco further fueled speculation about a possible cinematic universe.
Unni Mukundan Issues Clarification
Earlier, actor Unni Mukundan clarified that he is not part of 'Kattalan' or any connected universe, despite online speculation. A statement from his production banner read, 'We would like to kindly clarify that Unni Mukundan is not a part of this project or any universe. We humbly request our fans and the public to refrain from questioning us further regarding any association with the concerned project.' Apart from Antony Varghese Pepe, the film also stars Dushara Vijayan, Jagadish, Siddique, Kabir Duhan Singh, and Anson Paul in key roles.
