The supernatural thriller Thamma has taken a strategic digital route, offering fans an early viewing opportunity before its official streaming debut. The film, which had a theatrical run, is now available through an early access rental model on Amazon Prime Video.
Early Access Details and Wider Release Date
For viewers eager to watch the film immediately, Prime Video launched an early rental option on 2 December. The rental is priced at ₹349. Customers who choose this path will have 30 days to start watching after renting, and once they press play, a 48-hour window to complete the film.
However, for those preferring to wait, the movie will be available at no extra cost to all standard Prime Video subscribers starting 16 December. From this date, viewers can stream it freely without any time limits.
Plot and Cast of the Supernatural Thriller
Thamma follows the story of Alok Goyal, a timid journalist from Delhi who actively hunts for supernatural tales. His quest takes a dramatic turn during a trek where he is attacked by a bear. He is saved by Tadaka, a powerful Betaal from a secretive tribe.
Alok develops feelings for her and brings her to his home in Delhi. Her unusual habit of consuming blood baffles his family. The situation escalates when a violent incident forces Tadaka to defend herself, revealing her true identity. The plot thickens with the escape of Yakshasan, a cruel ancient Betaal leader imprisoned since the Partition, complicating the protagonists' lives further.
Box Office Performance and Production Costs
The film represented a significant investment for Maddock Films. Reports indicate the production budget was around ₹140 crore, with the total landing cost, including marketing, reaching approximately ₹150 crore. This makes it one of the studio's most expensive projects.
At the box office, Thamma collected ₹134.45 crore net in India over its first 31 days, with a gross of ₹160.75 crore. It added ₹26.50 crore from overseas markets. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the worldwide total stood at ₹187.25 crore, though some reports suggested a figure as high as ₹211 crore.
Notably, Maddock Films had secured its financial position by recovering most production and marketing costs through pre-theatre deals for OTT, satellite, and music rights. This strategy meant that theatrical earnings primarily contributed to the film's profit.
Maddock Films' Partnership and Cast Collaborations
The release is part of a multi-year content partnership between Maddock Films and Prime Video. This deal covers streaming rights for eight films, including anticipated titles like the Stree franchise, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, and the series Jee Karda.
Contrary to popular belief, Thamma is not Nawazuddin Siddiqui's first project with Maddock Films. He previously collaborated with the studio for the 2015 hit Badlapur, where his antagonist role was highly praised. Similarly, this is not Ayushmann Khurrana's first film with the banner; he starred in their 2019 release Bala. Rashmika Mandanna also has a prior association, having featured in Maddock's 2025 historical drama Chhaava.
