Actor-politician Kamal Haasan met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Thursday and urged the state government to launch a state-owned OTT platform. He argued that such a platform would safeguard the interests of the Tamil film industry and promote local content.
During the meeting, Haasan also called for the formation of a strong anti-piracy team, emphasizing that piracy undermines the investments and hard work of thousands of people involved in filmmaking. He highlighted that the Tamil film industry loses significant revenue due to illegal distribution and streaming of movies.
Haasan's proposal comes amid growing concerns over the dominance of global OTT platforms and the need for regional platforms to preserve cultural identity. He suggested that a state-owned platform could provide a dedicated space for Tamil cinema, including independent films and regional content that often struggle to find distribution.
The actor-politician also stressed the importance of creating a legal framework to combat piracy effectively. He recommended stricter penalties for offenders and better coordination between law enforcement agencies and the film industry.
Chief Minister Vijay reportedly responded positively to the suggestions and assured Haasan that the government would examine the feasibility of establishing a state-owned OTT platform. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the state's information and technology department.
This development marks a significant step in addressing the challenges faced by the Tamil film industry in the digital age. If implemented, the platform could set a precedent for other states to follow.
