Dileep's latest comedy venture, 'Bha Bha Ba', is set for its digital premiere, marking its transition from theatrical screens to the OTT space. The film will begin streaming on the platform ZEE5 from January 16, available from 12 am. This move comes shortly after its theatrical run which began on December 18.
From Theatres to Streaming: Release Details and Platform
The makers have officially confirmed that 'Bha. Bha. Ba.' will be available for subscribers on ZEE5. The digital version will include English subtitles. However, there is no clear confirmation yet on whether the film will be dubbed or offered with subtitles in other South Indian languages, leaving Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada audiences in anticipation.
Box Office Performance and Audience Reception
The film's journey in cinemas was met with a mixed response. While some viewers appreciated its spoof comedy elements, others were critical of the storyline. Despite featuring a much-discussed brief appearance by superstar Mohanlal, the film failed to make a strong impact on box office collections.
According to data from the Sacnilk website, the movie started decently but saw collections drop rapidly. In its first 13 days, it earned approximately Rs 22.95 crores in India net. The 14th day added only Rs 15 lakhs, bringing the total 14-day collection to around Rs 23.10 crores. A significant dip was noted on Day 12, with earnings of Rs 20 lakhs reflecting a steep 63.64 percent fall from the previous day, a trend that continued.
Cast, Crew, and Behind-the-Scenes
'Bha. Bha. Ba.' stars Dileep in the lead role, supported by a notable ensemble cast including Vineeth Sreenivasan, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Redin Kingsley, Sandy Master, Balu Varghese, Siddarth Bharathan, Baiju Santhosh, and Saranya Ponvanan. The film marks the directorial debut of Dhananjay Shankar. The screenplay was penned by actor-duo Fahim Safar and Noorin Shereef. Marketed as a mass spoof film, it heavily relies on references from older popular films and characters for its humour.
Controversy and Makers' Clarification
The film found itself in hot water due to a particular scene that upset many viewers online. This release is notably Dileep's first after his acquittal in the actress abduction and assault case, which added a layer of sensitivity for a section of the audience. Netizens pointed to a dialogue where a character says, “Annan kidnapped her and m** her,” followed by, “Relax bro, she is a cow,” sparking widespread criticism for being insensitive.
In response, writers Noorin Shereef and Fahim Safar addressed the issue in an interview with Ginger Media. Fahim clarified, “Not a single scene or dialogue was done to hurt anyone.” They elaborated that the film is a pure spoof built on references and humour. “If people understood what we intended, that itself is a good thing,” they stated, explaining that the controversial line was meant to showcase the negative mindset of a character, arguing that it is essential for the audience to dislike a villain who is portrayed as bad.
The OTT release offers a second life to 'Bha Bha Ba', allowing a wider audience to judge the film amidst its blend of comedy, star cameos, and surrounding debates.
