The untimely demise of Zubeen Garg, a towering figure in the Indian music industry, left a void in millions of hearts. As investigations into his tragic death continue, his family has taken a significant step to immortalise his vision. On Friday, the celebrated singer's wife and sister announced the formation of a trust in his name, dedicated to continuing the work he passionately championed.
A Trust Born from a Shared Vision
Addressing the media at a press conference in Guwahati, Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima Garg, and sister, Palmee Borthakur, shared their plans. The decision, they revealed, came after extensive consultations with family members, relatives, well-wishers, and associates from various fields who were close to the artist. The 'Zubeen Garg Trust' will operate from the family's donated property in the Kharghuli area of Guwahati.
Garima Garg elaborated on the trust's core objectives, stating it would focus on issues dear to Zubeen. "The trust will work on issues close to Zubeen's heart, including nature conservation and promoting young talent", she said. Furthermore, it will undertake the scientific preservation of the intellectual property rights of his vast creative portfolio. A dedicated research wing will also be established to study and document his life and artistic contributions.
Collaboration and Coordination for a Larger Impact
The new trust will not work in isolation. It is set to collaborate closely with the 'Kalaguru Artists Foundation', an organisation originally founded by Zubeen Garg himself. This partnership aims to amplify efforts in social and cultural spheres. Additionally, the 'Abhinaya: Jonkie Borthakur Performing Arts Academy', named after the singer's late sister, will coordinate its activities with the trust.
In a heartfelt statement, Garima Garg emphasised the collective responsibility to carry forward Zubeen's mission. "Zubeen dedicated his life to the people of Assam. It is now our responsibility to uphold his values and take his work forward by following the path he showed", she remarked. The family also confirmed that members of the devoted 'Zubeen Fan Club' will be integral to the trust's operations, ensuring the singer's legacy reaches his vast audience.

The musical icon, Zubeen Garg, passed away on September 19, 2025, in a tragic incident while swimming in the sea during his visit to Singapore for the Northeast Festival. The circumstances surrounding his death led to suspicions of foul play, prompting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take charge of the case.
The investigation has led to serious charges against several individuals. Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer's secretary Siddhartha Sharma, and two band members, Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, have been charged with murder. The singer's cousin, Sandipan Garg, faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. On conspiracy charges, his two personal security officers (PSOs), Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have also been booked. The legal proceedings continue as the family seeks closure while building a lasting tribute to the beloved artist.
