A unique Christmas celebration at Kolkata's Oddspace successfully fused the energy of live hip-hop with a whimsical Bengali fairytale aesthetic, creating a memorable year-end event for the city's music and culture enthusiasts.
A Night of Diverse Musical Acts
The evening was expertly curated with a dynamic lineup of performances. DJ National Animal set the initial mood, welcoming guests with a selection of underground Christmas-themed hip-hop and R&B mixes. This was swiftly followed by a series of high-energy live acts that brought the crowd to the dance floor. The stage saw successive performances by Street 24, Avik, Ron-E, Pavel, Bishop, Voldi, and AGx.
Midway through the event, the tempo took a deliberate turn. The duo Streetfood presented an acoustic set, offering slower, funk-leaning R&B numbers. This provided a nuanced contrast to the earlier acts while maintaining the audience's engagement.
The Central Showcase and Reflective Finale
The Banglar Thek showcase formed the central segment of the night and was met with a particularly strong response from the attendees. A festive cake-cutting ceremony followed, creating a natural pause in the programme and allowing for interactions between the artists and the crowd.
As the gathering grew more intimate, Bohiragoto took over to close the evening. Their performance, leaning into trip-hop and experimental sounds, brought the night to a reflective and atmospheric end.
Creating a Space for Cultural Exchange
The event also attracted notable figures from Kolkata's creative scene. Attendees included Gaboo of Lakkhichara, filmmaker Q, Sammy, and Nishad, among other musicians and cultural personalities.
Speaking about the debut of this event concept, Cizzy highlighted its core intention. "This was meant to be a space where different sounds and people could come together naturally," Cizzy said. "The response tonight shows there’s room for that kind of exchange." The visual layer of the night was provided by a costume theme inspired by characters from Bengali fairytales, adding a distinctive local and creative flair to the festive atmosphere.
