Lyricist Karunakaran on Magudam Song, Working with Ilaiyaraaja & Acting
Karunakaran: My Magudam Song Will Bring Hope

In an exciting development for Tamil cinema fans, noted lyricist Karunakaran has been roped in to pen a song for the upcoming Vishal-starrer 'Magudam'. The artist, who has previously collaborated with the actor on films like 'Chakra' and 'Veeramae Vaagai Soodum', shared that this third collaboration holds special significance as it was a personal request from Vishal himself.

A Song of Hope for Magudam

Karunakaran revealed that the track he is crafting for 'Magudam' is intended to be one that brings hope to listeners. He expressed his enthusiasm for working with Vishal again, stating that the actor directly approached him for this project. This marks their third creative partnership, solidifying a successful actor-lyricist combination in Kollywood.

The Creative Process and Career Milestones

Discussing his creative methodology, Karunakaran explained that he primarily writes on paper but also utilizes voice notes for convenience. He believes in trusting his first instinct when he hears a tune. "When I hear a tune, the first thought that comes to mind will almost always be correct," he said. However, he humbly adds that the final and best version is ultimately the one chosen by the film's director.

His journey in films began with the song 'Kadhal Vandhale' from the movie 'Vallavan', which was composed and sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Reflecting on his career, Karunakaran singled out his collaboration with the legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja as the most defining moment. He first wrote the song 'Enna Nadakkudhu' for Ilaiyaraaja in 'Maamanithan'.

For Karunakaran, this achievement surpasses even winning an Oscar. "Writing for Raaja sir is even bigger than winning an Oscar, for me. If someone asks me what I’ve done in my career, I’ll tell them, 'I’ve written a song for Raaja sir,'" he shared emotionally. He credited Yuvan Shankar Raja for facilitating this dream collaboration, which later continued with the song 'Head Up High' in the Naga Chaitanya film 'Custody'.

Venturing into Acting

Beyond his primary craft of writing lyrics, Karunakaran has also explored acting. He made an appearance in Arun Vijay's 'Malai Malai' and is set to feature next in Arya's upcoming project, 'Mr. X'. His foray into acting for 'Mr. X' came about through his friendship with the film's director, Manu Anand. Karunakaran had previously written the theme song for Anand's film 'FIR', which led to the acting opportunity.

As he balances his dual roles as a lyricist and an actor, Karunakaran continues to be a versatile creative force in the Tamil film industry, with his work in 'Magudam' eagerly awaited by audiences.
