Malayali Rapper Double J Hails AR Rahman Collaboration as Career Milestone
Kerala-born rapper Double J is experiencing what he describes as "a key moment in my musical journey" following his collaboration with Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. The track Mayile, featured in the upcoming Tamil film Moonwalk, stars Prabhu Deva in the lead role and marks the acting debut of Rahman himself, while incorporating a rap verse by Double J.
'Climbing the Height of Success': Double J on Working with Rahman
"I felt that all my hustle had finally paid off," the rapper expressed enthusiastically. "It feels like climbing the height of success and God just blessed me with greatness. If Rahman sir thinks I could rap with him, it is the biggest validation. I just feel more confident than ever before."
Double J recently performed alongside Rahman for the second time at a show in Chennai, an experience he found even more special than their first encounter. "There's so much precision and professionalism in every single thing. Even the most minute details are so well handled," he observed. "Whenever I see him on stage and he smiles at me, I'm like, 'Oh my God, he really recognises who I am.' It's still hard to believe."
Humbling Experience and Professional Growth
The collaboration has been both exhilarating and humbling for the rapper. "Usually I don't feel nervous before performances, but this time, I realised how much more there is to learn. Being surrounded by such dedicated artistes was a crazy experience altogether," Double J explained.
Known for his rapidfire delivery and English-language rap, Double J has cultivated his presence through independent releases, live performances, and digital platforms. The Moonwalk project has brought fresh attention to his work and introduced his distinctive rap style to a broader film audience.
Overcoming Challenges as an English Rapper in India
However, Double J acknowledges that gaining acceptance in the Indian music scene hasn't been easy. "That's how it is for any English rapper in any state in India is hard, as regional languages sail well. But I didn't feel like myself when I rapped in Malayalam," he shared. "I love the language, but I grew up with Eminem, Linkin Park and Kanye West. I wanted to show the world that anything is possible, even if people say no to you."
The rapper added, "The 'nos' just added fuel to my fire." His perseverance has paid off significantly, as he currently holds the title of India's fastest English rapper in the record books, having broken his own record at an impressive 6.9 words per second.
Celebrating Achievement with Latest Single 'Winners'
Double J's latest single, Winners, celebrates the spirit of achievement and pride. "When someone wins in life, we rejoice and cherish," he said. "Similarly, I felt this was the moment when I made Kerala proud. DexterDuke, the producer of the track, and I decided to go all in and make this banger for all the visionaries and hardworking people from Kerala."
The collaboration with AR Rahman represents not just a professional achievement but a personal triumph for Double J, validating his unique approach to rap music in the Indian entertainment landscape and opening new doors for his artistic expression.
