The hills of Darjeeling are in mourning following the sudden demise of their beloved musical son, Prashant Tamang. The 43-year-old singer passed away due to a cardiac arrest at his residence in Delhi on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the community and the Indian music fraternity.
A Sudden and Tragic Morning
Prashant Tamang felt unwell around 6 am on Sunday at his home in Janakpuri, Delhi. His family, which includes his wife Geeta Thapa and their three-year-old daughter Ariah Tamang, rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, doctors at the medical facility declared him dead upon arrival. The news of his untimely death has left fans and loved ones devastated.
From Police Constable to Cultural Icon
Prashant Tamang's journey to stardom was both humble and inspiring. After his father died in an accident, Prashant stepped into his shoes by joining the Kolkata Police as a constable. His innate musical talent, however, soon found an outlet when he became a part of the city police's orchestra. His life transformed dramatically after he participated in and won a popular reality music show. This victory was not just personal; it resonated deeply in the Darjeeling hills, turning him into a powerful symbol of Gorkha identity and cultural pride. His rise is also noted for reshaping the region's socio-political landscape and contributing to the prominence of political leader Bimal Gurung.
Final Performances and Condolences
In the weeks leading up to his death, Prashant maintained a busy performance schedule. He had returned from a show in Dubai on December 27. Shortly after, he travelled to Arunachal Pradesh for another performance on January 7, returning to Delhi the very next day. His sister, Anupama Gurung, recounted speaking to him over a video call on January 8. "He sent me videos of his show and appeared to be in perfect health," she shared, highlighting the sudden nature of the tragedy. The family plans to bring his body back to his hometown, Darjeeling, for the final rites.
The passing of Prashant Tamang has drawn condolences from across the political and social spectrum. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Darjeeling's Member of Parliament, Raju Bista of the BJP, expressed their grief. Anit Thapa, the Chief Executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), also offered his heartfelt condolences. The loss marks the end of an era for a man whose voice became the anthem of a community's aspirations and pride.
