Vat Savitri 2026: Story
In northern India, the Vat Savitri festival is highly significant and is observed to seek favors from Mother Savitri. According to Hindu texts, Savitri married the short-lived Satyavaan. One day, while Satyavaan was working in the forest, Yamraaj, the lord of death, came to take his life. When Savitri arrived at the jungle and found her husband dead, she saw Yamraj and began to follow him. She begged Yamraj to return her husband's life, but he refused. Yamraj then asked her to return, but she declined. He offered her three blessings: first, the sight of her father-in-law; second, the lost kingdom of her father-in-law; and third, the ability to bear 100 sons. After bestowing these blessings, Yamraj departed, but Savitri continued to follow him. When questioned, Savitri replied that she could not become the mother of 100 sons without her husband's life. Acknowledging his defeat, Yamraj returned Satyavaan's life.
Vat Savitri 2026: Puja Rituals
- Women wake up early and take a bath before beginning any rituals.
- They adorn themselves with jewelry and dress in elegant, traditional sarees or outfits.
- Prepare satvik food for bhog prasad and bring flowers, haldi, kumkum, a kalash filled with water, and kaccha soot (a sacred white raw thread).
