Agartala: Shubham Biswas, an anti-drug advocate and operator of two rehabilitation centers in Tripura, was arrested on Wednesday for using offensive language and threatening a leader from the BJP's cultural wing, Rajesh Ghosh, on Facebook.
Background of the Incident
Rajesh Ghosh, a well-known singer affiliated with the ruling party, filed an FIR at Amtali police station two days prior, alleging that Biswas threatened to sever his hands in a Facebook message. Biswas managed a rehab center in Bishramganj in Sepahijala district and another in Agartala.
Protest and Arrest
In response to the threat, a group of Yuva Morcha leaders protested outside the Amtali police station, demanding Biswas's arrest for his unlawful actions. Following the FIR, police conducted a raid at a rehabilitation center at Abhoy Nagar in the city, leading to the arrest of Shubham Biswas. This action concluded the social media conflict between the two individuals.
Leaders from Yuva Morcha claimed that while Shubham portrayed himself as a hero in the fight against drugs on social media, he had actually been soliciting funds at his rehabilitation facilities. They alleged that his activities were not entirely altruistic.
Counter Complaint
Feeling threatened, Shubham also filed a grievance at the West Agartala police station against Rajesh, alleging that Ghosh had been engaging in a defamatory campaign against him online. However, the West Agartala police had not yet responded to Shubham's complaint as of the latest reports.
The incident highlights the tensions that can arise from social media interactions, especially when they involve public figures and sensitive issues like drug abuse. The arrest has sparked discussions about the misuse of platforms for threats and the need for accountability.
