Jordan Staal lifted the Stanley Cup with Carolina on Sunday night after the Hurricanes shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6, completing a 16-3 postseason run that earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy. At 37, he became the oldest player to win the award and set an NHL record with a 17-year gap between championships. But once the formal questions ended and Staal's kids joined him at the podium, his daughter Abigail had a question of her own.
Why Did Jordan Staal's Daughter Ask About the Brady Tkachuk Fight?
Abigail did not ease into it. She grabbed the microphone, skipped any setup, and went straight back to Game 1 of the first round against Ottawa.
"We're going to go way back to the first game in the first season," she said. "Why did you punch that guy? Questions that need to be answered, guys."
The room burst into laughter. Three seconds into that opener, Staal and Senators captain Brady Tkachuk had dropped the gloves in one of the fastest fights in recent playoff memory. Tkachuk landed first, Staal responded with a heavy right, and the tone for a physically intense postseason was set before the puck had barely moved. Abigail had clearly been sitting on that question for a while. Staal smiled, offered no real answer, and kept it short. "I'll answer that later."
He had also gently corrected her earlier in the presser. She noted he had called his children his "crew" in a previous interview. "I thought you called us crew?" she asked. "Crew, you're a crew," Staal confirmed.
What Makes Jordan Staal's 2026 Stanley Cup Win Historically Significant?
The championship is more than a career footnote. Staal won his first Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009. This one, 17 years later with Carolina, breaks the record previously held by Hall of Fame defenceman Chris Chelios, who went 16 years between titles with Montreal in 1986 and Detroit in 2002.
Staal reflected on the moment with obvious emotion after lifting the trophy. "It was still just as light. My goodness, what an amazing feeling," he said. He later added, "It's a dream come true, by far," speaking about the years invested in building Carolina into a legitimate contender.
That journey now ends with a championship and a Conn Smythe. The Tkachuk fight bookmarked the start of it. Abigail made sure nobody forgot.
