RDJ Teases 'Avengers: Doomsday' as Doctor Doom Return

Robert Downey Jr is generating excitement for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 'Avengers: Doomsday'. The actor, who will portray the darker villain Doctor Victor Von Doom, has shared intriguing details about the upcoming superhero film, assuring fans it will not disappoint.

RDJ's Confidence in the Film

Speaking with CBR alongside co-director Joe Russo, Downey expressed confidence in 'Doomsday', stating it has "landed in a place that I think will more than suffice." He clarified that his statement pertains not just to his performance but to "the way it's been structured and the other characters." Without revealing specifics, he added, "There's something going on in 'Doomsday', and forward that is literally the only antidote to: How do you not have these films be let down after an 'Infinity War' and an 'Endgame?' And boy, have we laboured long and hard to bring that down."

Joe Russo's Tease

Russo teased, "There are a lot of surprises. I think 'Doomsday' is the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them."

Reflection on the Marvel Saga

Downey also reflected on the team's appreciation for continuing the Marvel saga with 'Avengers: Doomsday' and its sequel, 'Avengers: Secret Wars'. "To still be engaging with people who are critical when we fall short, but who understand how difficult it is when we get it right," he said.

A Significant Shift

'Doomsday' marks a major shift for Downey, who previously played superhero Iron Man in the MCU. His final appearance as that character was in 2019's 'Avengers: Endgame', which concluded the Infinity Saga. Since then, Marvel Studios has seen mixed box office results, with only films like 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' and 'Deadpool & Wolverine' achieving significant success.

Release Dates

'Avengers: Doomsday' is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, while its follow-up 'Avengers: Secret Wars' is set for December 17, 2027. Both films are expected to close the MCU's Multiverse Saga.
