The makers of the film 'Karuppu', starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan and directed by RJ Balaji, have issued a public apology to music legend Ilaiyaraaja. In an official statement, the team acknowledged that a dialogue in the film had caused distress to the renowned composer, and they clarified that there was never any intention to hurt or disrespect him.
Official Apology Shared on Social Media
The production house took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their apology. They wrote, 'We understand that a particular dialogue appearing in Karuppu has caused concern and has upset him. We sincerely regret that the dialogue has resulted in such sentiments.' The statement further emphasized, 'There was absolutely no intention to offend, hurt, or disrespect Mr. Ilaiyaraaja, his contribution, or his rights in any manner. The reference formed part of a broader satirical context and was not conceived as a personal remark directed at him.'
The makers expressed their deep respect for Ilaiyaraaja, noting that his music and work have inspired countless people around the world. They added that they value his feelings immensely and took the matter seriously.
Changes to Be Made in the Film
The team also announced that they will make changes to the film. The controversial dialogue will be removed or modified in future versions of 'Karuppu', including all subsequent releases and screenings. The makers stated that this step is taken as a mark of respect for Ilaiyaraaja.
In their words, 'However, we deeply value and respect his feelings and, as a gesture of our regard, we have decided to remove/modify the concerned portion in future versions and subsequent exploitations of the film. We extend our sincere regards and continue to hold him in the highest respect.'
About 'Karuppu'
In 'Karuppu', Suriya plays Saravanan, a lawyer who later takes the form of local deity Karuppusamy. The story follows a father and daughter trapped within a corrupt legal system. Regarding its box office performance, on day 4, the film crossed over Rs 140 crore worldwide. According to trade analyst Sacnilk, the film added Rs 14.30 crore to its total on Monday in India across 5,947 shows.
