Gurgaon Woman Dies by Suicide, Husband Arrested

A 32-year-old woman employed at a private company in Gurgaon died by suicide at her office in Worldmark, Sector 65. Her husband, Amit Singal, was arrested on Thursday following an FIR lodged against him and his parents for abetment to suicide, based on a complaint from the woman's brother.

Incident Details

The woman, who worked at Birla Estates' Worldmark office, died on Wednesday afternoon. Her brother alleged that she endured mental, physical, and financial harassment from her husband and his family after marriage. He claimed that her husband assaulted her, including beating her with belts on April 27, and that photographs of her injuries were preserved as evidence.

Police Response

Police received a report around 2 pm on Wednesday about the incident at Tower 3 of the complex. By the time officers arrived, security guards had already transported her to CK Birla Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Her body was later moved to a government mortuary for autopsy. The Sector 65 police station registered the FIR under sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 3(5) of the BNS against the husband and other accused. An officer stated, "The family will be interrogated. If any instances of harassment come to light, necessary action will be taken."

Brother's Account

The brother told police that he spoke to his sister at 12:07 pm on Tuesday. "She seemed unsettled, but she didn’t show any sign of distress indicating she would take the extreme step," he said. About two hours later, the family received a call informing them of her suicide. The family alleged that she was not allowed to keep her annual salary of Rs 12 lakh, which she had to give entirely to her husband, who refused to share any money for her personal expenses. The brother claimed he regularly sent money for her daily needs.

Caste Harassment Allegations

According to the police complaint, the woman was frequently taunted by her husband over caste differences, and her mother-in-law supported her son when he beat his wife. The couple belonged to different castes. When she visited her parents' home in Dehradun, she was allegedly threatened with divorce. The brother also posted a video on social media seeking justice. "She was married in Meerut and used to commute daily from Meerut to Gurgaon for work. Her husband, a chartered accountant named Amit Singal, harassed her for a long time," he said.
