Dwyane Wade, the NBA legend, and popular actress Gabrielle Union appear to have built a beautiful life for themselves and their daughter. While their marriage seems perfect from the outside, Gabrielle Union has been vocal about the issues they have faced, including the fact that Dwyane Wade fathered a child with another woman just months before they tied the knot in 2013.
Gabrielle Union Shares Heartbreak Over Fertility Issues
A few years ago, in an essay for TIME, the actress opened up about her fertility struggles and the moment Dwyane Wade suggested surrogacy. Gabrielle Union wrote, “I didn’t receive this as concern at the time… It sounded like an acknowledgement of failure.” The “Bring It On” star added, “Because at that point I would have sold my soul to get out of the endless cycle of loss. What was the going rate for souls? What was mine worth, anyway?”
Gabrielle Union continued, “The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily — while I was unable to — left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind.” The actress also spoke about the moment she saw her daughter for the first time on an ultrasound: “It was suddenly incredibly real… Dwyane took my hand, and there was so much happiness on his face, I lost it. My cry was a choke stopped up in my throat, tears streaming down.”
Gabrielle Union Considered Ending Her Marriage
Gabrielle Union went through a challenging time in the initial years of her marriage as she struggled with fertility issues. In several interviews, she admitted to experiencing multiple miscarriages, which took a heavy toll on her physical and mental health. This led to depression and comparisons with other women. She even considered ending their marriage so Dwyane Wade could have a child.
Fortunately, things worked out for the couple as they welcomed their daughter, Kaavia Wade, through surrogacy in 2018. The couple remains together and continues to share their journey with fans.
