Sam Levinson on the Shocking Death of Nate Jacobs

Sam Levinson, the creator of 'Euphoria,' addressed the latest episode of season 3, which ended with one of the most shocking deaths in the series. In a recent interview, Levinson discussed the direction of the third season and his desire to deliver something 'horrific and anxiety-inducing' to the audience.

The Fate of Nate Jacobs

In the episode, Nate Jacobs is buried alive in the desert as a consequence of his debts, with Cassie also taken captive. Levinson aimed to raise the stakes with each episode. Speaking to Esquire, he explained his approach: 'I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma, and with that in mind, I always think, Well, how can I give it to them? How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn't so sure they wanted it?'

Levinson added that he wanted viewers to question their own desires from the show. Nate is buried alive with a pipe for air, but a rattlesnake crawls through the pipe and bites him, leading to his death. Levinson intended to make the audience wonder, 'Oh God, I don't know. Should he have had it better? Did he deserve it?'

Regarding the snake, Levinson revealed that a non-venomous snake was used for scenes with Jacob Elordi in the coffin, while real venomous snakes were used for surface shots showing the snake slithering toward the pipe opening.

When Does 'Euphoria' Season 3 End?

The final episode of 'Euphoria' season 3 airs on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Max. Levinson urged fans to watch the final two episodes promptly to avoid spoilers online.
