Actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh on Wednesday evening addressed the ongoing protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar during an Instagram Live session, stating, "Keep me away from all this, I'm an artist." The statement came as a response to fans who questioned his stance on the demonstrations.
Diljit's Instagram Live clarifies his position
During the live interaction, which lasted over 30 minutes, Dosanjh answered numerous queries from his followers. When asked about the CJP protests, he firmly distanced himself from political activism, emphasizing his identity as an entertainer. "Main vaapas aaunga, but politics is not my field," he added, referencing his upcoming film title.
The actor's remarks come amid heightened public attention on the CJP's sit-in at Jantar Mantar, which began on June 28. The group, known for its satirical protests, has been demanding accountability from the government on environmental issues. However, Dosanjh's comments suggest he wishes to remain apolitical, despite his massive fan following.
Fan reactions and social media buzz
Following the live session, social media platforms saw mixed reactions. Some fans supported his decision to stay away from politics, while others criticized him for not using his platform for social causes. A Twitter user wrote, "Diljit is right, artists shouldn't be dragged into every protest." Another countered, "He could have shown solidarity without being political."
Diljit's film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, is scheduled for release later this year. The actor has consistently maintained a focus on his music and acting career, rarely commenting on political matters. This incident marks one of the few times he has explicitly addressed a protest movement.
Background of CJP protests
The Cockroach Janta Party, a civil society group, has been conducting a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar since June 28. Their demands include stricter pollution control measures and transparency in environmental policy. The protest has gained traction among youth but remains non-partisan.
Diljit's refusal to engage aligns with his past statements where he emphasized that his role is to entertain, not to lead social movements. As of now, no other celebrities have publicly commented on the CJP protests.
