The Bombay High Court on Wednesday closed the defamation suit filed by filmmaker Aditya Dhar against Santosh Kumar, who had accused Dhar of stealing the script for the film Dhurandhar. The suit was withdrawn after Kumar issued a public apology, bringing an end to the legal dispute over the script's originality.
The Allegations and Legal Action
Santosh Kumar, a writer, had claimed that the script of Dhurandhar was plagiarized from his own unpublished work. In response, Aditya Dhar, known for directing the blockbuster Uri: The Surgical Strike, filed a defamation suit in the Bombay High Court, asserting that the allegations were baseless and damaging to his reputation.
Dhar's legal team argued that the accusations were false and made with malicious intent, causing significant harm to the filmmaker's professional standing. The suit sought an apology and damages for defamation.
Resolution Through Apology
During the proceedings, Santosh Kumar expressed regret for his statements and issued a formal apology to Aditya Dhar. The apology was accepted by Dhar, who then moved to withdraw the defamation suit. The court, noting the amicable resolution, closed the case.
In his apology, Kumar stated that his claims were made without sufficient evidence and that he did not intend to cause any harm to Dhar's reputation. He further acknowledged that the script of Dhurandhar was original and not copied from his work.
Implications for the Film Industry
The closure of the case has been welcomed by the film fraternity, which often faces such disputes over creative content. Legal experts believe that this case highlights the importance of resolving plagiarism allegations through dialogue rather than prolonged litigation.
Dhurandhar, which was in the news for its script controversy, can now move forward without the cloud of legal battles. The film is expected to be a high-budget production, and the resolution of this dispute allows the team to focus on its release.
Aditya Dhar, in a brief statement, expressed satisfaction with the outcome and thanked the court for its swift handling of the matter. He reiterated his commitment to original storytelling and hoped that such baseless accusations would not recur in the future.
