Centre forms Prasoon Joshi-led panel to boost film industry

The central government has constituted a high-level committee under the chairmanship of Prasoon Joshi, noted lyricist and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson, to recommend measures for strengthening India's film industry. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, according to a Ministry of Information and Broadcasting statement released on 29 June 2026.

Committee's mandate and scope

The panel has been tasked with suggesting a comprehensive framework to address key challenges facing the film sector, including piracy, funding, infrastructure, and global outreach. It will also explore ways to streamline film certification processes and promote Indian cinema internationally. The committee is expected to submit its report within three months.

Industry stakeholders involved

Besides Prasoon Joshi, the committee includes representatives from film producers' associations, directors' guilds, technicians' unions, and streaming platforms. The government aims to create a more conducive environment for filmmakers by addressing regulatory hurdles and encouraging investment. "This initiative will help unlock the full potential of India's creative economy," the statement noted.
