Celina Jaitly's Brother Detained in UAE, Court Steps In

Bollywood actress Celina Jaitly has approached the Delhi High Court seeking intervention for her brother, a retired Indian Army Major, who has been held in the United Arab Emirates for over a year. The court has now directed the Ministry of External Affairs to assist in establishing contact with him.

An Emotional Plea for a Brother's Rescue

In a heartfelt note shared on social media platform X, Celina Jaitly addressed her parents, expressing the anguish of her family. She revealed she has not been able to speak to her brother, Major (Retd) Vikrant Kumar Jaitly, for 15 months. The actress stated she filed a petition to gain access and secure legal representation for him, alleging he was abducted and detained in the UAE since September 6, 2024.

Delhi High Court's Directive and Government Action

During a recent hearing, the Delhi High Court took cognizance of the serious matter. The Ministry of External Affairs presented a status report and, in a significant move, appointed a Nodal Officer. This officer will coordinate with Celina Jaitly to facilitate access to her detained brother.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the Indian government, assured the court that best efforts would be made to enable the actress to speak with Vikrant Jaitly. The presiding judge directed the Ministry to actively work towards this communication. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for December 23.

A Glimmer of Hope for the Family

Celina Jaitly expressed gratitude towards the court and the government's law officer for acknowledging her suffering and her family's legacy of service. "I look forward to the next steps optimistically," she wrote in her note. Her advocate, Raghav Kacker, provided a crucial update, confirming that the nodal officer's appointment is time-bound. He also relayed reassuring news, stating, "We are happy to inform you that her brother is alive and he is well."

The case highlights the challenges faced by Indian nationals abroad and the judicial mechanisms available to seek redressal. The court's intervention has brought a measure of hope to the Jaitly family after a long and distressing period of uncertainty.
