Thousands of Hindus in Bangladesh have taken to the streets in protest over the alleged desecration of an image of Lord Ram and the suspension of an 81-foot Ram statue project in Gaibandha district. Demonstrators in Dhaka carried out torchlight marches and demanded the arrest of those allegedly involved in the incident.
Statue Project Suspended Amid Threats
The Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple committee halted construction of the statue, claiming threats from Islamist groups. Protesters have issued a 72-hour ultimatum and warned of wider agitation if action is not taken.
Minority Rights Debate Reignited
The controversy has reignited debate over minority rights and religious freedoms in Bangladesh, where Hindus make up about 8 percent of the population. The protests reflect growing concerns among the Hindu community about safety and religious expression.
