Singer-composer Adnan Sami has released a new single titled "Lipstick Laga Ke, Nazar Utar Le," aiming to dismiss the stigma surrounding lipstick and redefine it in a playful manner. The song features both men and women across age groups applying lipstick, challenging societal norms associated with women wearing makeup.
Challenging Social Stigmas
In an interview with PTI, Sami expressed his confusion over unnecessary stigmas attached to everyday things. He emphasized that everyone should have the freedom to choose what they want to do within reason, calling it the essence of freedom and liberation. The singer believes that whether it is a woman or anyone else, they should not be judged for their choices.
Celebrating Culture
While the word "lipstick" often evokes images of glamour and high fashion, Sami chose to give the track a rooted flavor by presenting women in vibrant ethnic looks. He said, "I wanted to go completely the other direction and celebrate our true culture in every way possible." The music video features a rebellious small-town girl who defies superstitions about applying lipstick in the evening, claiming it wards off the evil eye.
Superstitions and Personal Beliefs
Sami noted that many superstitions exist worldwide, such as the belief that a black cat crossing your path brings bad luck or the Turkish concept of the evil eye. He said that people are not apologetic about their superstitions, which can be cultural or personal. The singer did not mock these beliefs but rather highlighted them as part of human experience.
Addressing Vulgarity in Music
The singer also weighed in on the debate over vulgar lyrics and objectification of women in modern songs. He described such tracks as reflections of a "sad and shallow mindset" and asserted that true artists should not rely on gimmicks. Sami stated, "Objectifying women is a complete no. There is so much depth in a woman that she has to offer." He emphasized that relying on women to attract listeners indicates a lack of confidence in one's craft.
Double Entendre in Music
Sami acknowledged that songs with double meanings have existed for decades, citing iconic tracks like "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja" and "Baahon Mein Chale Aao" as examples of sensual songs without indecent lyrics. He joked that the once-controversial "Choli Ke Peeche" now seems like a "nursery rhyme" compared to current releases. He added that vulgarity is not exclusive to today's artists and that he has never associated himself with double-meaning songs.
Personal Transformation
The singer, who became an Indian citizen after moving from Pakistan in the 2000s, has also impressed fans with his physical transformation, showcasing a chiseled jawline and significant weight loss. The song "Lipstick" has been released by Zee Music Company.
